weekly Produce Box Discussion

Fall is here!

We didn't get much of a summer or heck even an Indian Summer here in San Francisco, but that is okay because you can smell, feel and even better taste Fall right now!

The figs are cheap and good and the turnips and root veggies are ready for the slow roasts and pickling jars....I can't wait to get my fall on!

Here is what I got this week:

Featuring:
Bok Choy
Turnips
Broccoli Rabe
Fennel
Radishes
chard
sweet peppers
pears
heirloom toms
melon
grapes

Weekly Produce Box Discussion

I have been dealing with a load of tomatoes and I love them and don't want them to go away, it's kind of this hoarding desire to hold off on using them all...I do that with food I know I don't have an endless supply of (like my figs that I ate one at a time savoring every last figgy bite). This week you get to look forward to mama meme's marinara sauce, a truly special treat....and a great way to use and store unused tomatoes for the future in the fridge.

Let's Rap about what I got this week:

Pair of Bartlett Pears
Gaggle of tomatoes
Precious Heirloom Toms
Purple Peppers
long red pepper
finger potatoes
melon
plums
lettuce
zucchini
huge radishes
broccoli
oh and the most fragrant Basil that is making my fridge smell like it's from Italy.

Back to tomato talk...like seriously I can't even describe how amazing they are right now, especially the heirlooms, some times it seems blasphemous to do anything with them other than tomato salads, like I mentioned before I have a food hoarding issue as well as a if you love it so much don't mess it up mentality. Most can be said with the contents of this weeks box as well....except for those potatoes that will be getting braised with some lamb later this week and that broccoli that will get turned into something non-boring (pinky swear). The highlight though will be Mama Meme's Sauce...Can't Wait!!!!

Ciao!

Weekly Produce Box Discussion

This week I received a tomato the size of a small baby and lots of other cool stuff.
And I learned 3 new things this week!

1. Don't put tomatoes in the fridge, the turn mealy. Who knew?!

2. Zucchini looses it's flavor from vine to bite fast, so that is probably why most people think it has no taste when they buy it in the grocery store.

3. from my mom Store figs in a egg carton with a damp paper towel, rotating them often, they will stay good for up to a week.

now to what I got!

Heirloom tomatoes
sweet peppers
mission figs
plums
gala apples
bartlett pears
broccoli
onion
butter lettuce
cucumber

Game Plan: I am thinking about making some homemade fun-free fig 'newtons' as in they will be gluten, sugar and dairy free....need to figure out how but I think it will rule. Also I am thinking crazy Mediterranean lamb burgers....mmmmm....I will be sure to keep you posted.

Weekly Produce Box Discussion

This week is a very exciting week for produce, I GOT FIGS!!!!! I assume that half reading this can care less, however I freaking love me some figs with goat cheese and balsamic, also maybe fig bars....oh I can't wait till my day off.

What I got:

Arugula
Fennel
Eggplant
Figs
Lemon Cucumbers
Sweet Peppers
Hotttt!!! Peppers
Asian Pears
Really cute Summer Squash

Normally I would give you a game plan, but all I can think of is fig bars and a fig salad with goat cheese, arugula and asian pear. A salad, I know, but sometimes throwing everything into a bowl is just about the best thing out there......

I do forecast some type of stuffed peppers or italian peppers (as per josh)....

if you want to join just check out taste-o-vision at the top of the page for deats.

Weekly Produce Box Discussion

This week I got an unusual amount of tomatoes and a basket (box) full of what screams to me Italiano! I also received an amazing bottle of olive oil that I can't wait to try...yeah Italian summer of food!

here's what I got:

awake

 asleep
peaches
pluots
green grapes
black plums
broccoli
mixed squash
roma tomatoes (1 ton)
mixed cherry tomatoes
leaf lettuce
celery
basil
yellow onion

menu plan of attack: white beans with a bed of sauteed squash-ghetti engulfed in a walnut-pesto with cherry tomatoes- the side will be fried eggplant kinda like mom used to make.

Ciao!

Weekly Produce Box Discussion

Here is the contents of this weeks CSA box, I think I may have to switch to having a larger size weekly, the small is pretty small....and the larger one got sweet peppers this week, a bit green with envy (produce joke) har...
here is what I got:

 Black Plums
Nectarines
Eggplant
tomatoes
mixed cherry tomatoes
lemon cucumbers (those little round potato looking things)
Italian basil
carrots

Tonight's menu plan of attack: roasted chicken with lemon and herbs, braised carrots and a lemon cucumber, tomato, basil salad.

Originally I was thinking lemon grilled chicken instead of roasted, but San Francisco's winter summer has been pretty gross, so I think I will be cooking indoors tonight... I am going to really do something really special with the eggplant, I am not sure quite yet, but I will keep you posted.
